I was born in the unheated bedroom of a one up, one down colliery house in a snowstorm. The midwife couldn’t get there so my Grandma delivered me. I spent much of my early childhood in that house as my mother worked and I loved it. It was a couple of doors down from the Trap, the social heart of Coxlodge.
When researching the history or a property it is interesting to consider the significance of a property or street name. You may find for example that the name has some link to a former building that stood on the site – A street name may have some association with the builder or developer or be related to its geographical situation.
In the delightful details that embellish a person’s life, which somehow make it into the news, we get a tantalising taste of what life was like for the people who lived in our properties through the years. At Discovering Heritage we will search through hundreds of years of news archives to find out if the houses you’ve lived in have a legacy in print!

The job of the house historian is to research the history of houses. In most cases, but not all, the property would be a someone’s home. House historians can research the history of any house or building.
It is the natural characteristic of the High Street shops that they come and go. Communities grow and develop and demand different things. Situations change, and during times of change, we can sometimes find clues to our High Street heritage.

In 1920s Gosforth History Kelly’s Newsagent opened at 147 Salters Road. He traded from Salters road for over 30 years. The area was known locally as Kelly’s corner.
